During my childhood, there was an incident where I behaved inconsistently with societal views or expectations of gender. At a school event, I decided to participate in a traditionally male-dominated activity, such as playing football. While it seemed like an innocent choice at the time, it challenged the prevailing gender norms and expectations prevalent within my community.
Explicitly, society’s expectations of gender were conveyed through various conventions and norms. For instance, dress codes were frequently segregated by gender, reinforcing the idea that certain clothing styles were appropriate for males, while others were suitable for females. This binary approach to gender identification left little room for individual expression. Implicitly, media representations, social interactions, and familial expectations all played a role in shaping perceptions of gender. The media portrayed males and females in stereotypical roles, further reinforcing societal norms. Similarly, familial expectations often favored behavior conforming to traditional gender roles. These explicit and implicit messages fostered a sense of dichotomy between what was permitted and what was frowned upon in terms of gender expression.
