One social issue that can be influenced by biological or genetic factors is addiction. Addiction is a complex behavioral disorder characterized by the compulsive use of substances or engagement in certain activities despite negative consequences. While environmental factors certainly play a significant role in addiction, there is evidence to suggest that genetic and biological factors also contribute to an individual’s vulnerability to developing addictive behaviors.

Research has shown that there is a genetic component to addiction. The heritability of addiction ranges from 40-60%, indicating that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of addiction (Kendler et al., 2003). Twin studies have provided evidence for the heritability of addiction, with a higher concordance rate for addiction in monozygotic (identical) twins compared to dizygotic (fraternal) twins. This suggests that genetic factors play a role in determining an individual’s susceptibility to addiction.

One of the genetic factors that has been implicated in addiction is variations in genes involved in the dopamine system. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in reward processing and motivation, and it has been implicated in addiction due to its involvement in the reinforcing effects of drugs of abuse. These structural changes in the brain can contribute to the compulsive behavior seen in addiction.
